From Research to Real-World Impact: How Iceberg+ Built UVPATCH for Smart Sun Protection

The Challenge

UV radiation is one of the most significant risk factors for skin cancer. While awareness has increased, tools for real-time prevention are still limited and rarely integrated into products people already use.

Most wearable devices focus on fitness tracking, not sun exposure or public health outcomes.

Beneficiary

UVPATCH was designed for two main user groups:

1. Individuals looking for practical, real-time protection from harmful UV exposure.

2. Companies in the textile and pharmaceutical sectors seeking to integrate health tech into mainstream products.

Delivered by

Iceberg+ coordinated the project in partnership with IMT Bucharest, drawing on its experience in applied research, digital transformation, and smart textile prototyping.

Through its CITT-I4T tech transfer center and EDIH network, Iceberg+ is ensuring the solution goes beyond prototyping and reaches the market through solid partnerships.

The
Solution

The science

The project uses photodiode-based UV sensors integrated into carbon nanotube textile fibers. These components are low-energy, water-resistant, and flexible enough to be embedded in swimwear.

The app

A mobile app connects to the sensors via Bluetooth, processes real-time data through a dedicated microcontroller, and provides personalized alerts based on the user’s skin type and UV exposure history.

Versatility

The power unit is discreet, rechargeable, and optimized for outdoor conditions.

The
Impact

Beyond the hardware, UVPATCH also includes sustainable design principles – from recycled materials to modular components – and offers a scalable path for integration in sportswear, construction gear, or children’s clothing.

The project creates commercial value for manufacturing partners, new use cases for wearable health devices, and public health value through early intervention.
